About Frama: history and franking machines

Frama (also known as Frama AG) is one of the world’s largest franking machine manufacturers and suppliers, headquartered in Lauperswil, Switzerland, where it designs, manufactures and distributes mailroom products to over 50 countries. Founded in 1970, Frama traces its franking heritage to the first machine built by Rudolf Jost in 1946.

Frama provides businesses in the UK with franking machines and other mailroom solutions. It has subsidiaries in countries including Belgium, the UK, India, the Netherlands, Sweden and South Africa, and sells through exclusive distributors elsewhere. Frama’s main market is Europe, and it is a highly export-oriented business, with around 90% of its income coming from exports.

Frama history

Frama AG was founded in 1970 in Lauperswil, but the first franking machine was manufactured in 1946 by Rudolf Jost. That first machine was a hand machine, soon followed by the first electronic franking machine in 1957. In 1969, Jost AG ran into financial trouble, and after Rudolf Jost died, Werner Haug took over – Frama AG was founded in 1970. Since then Frama has supplied mailroom products, including franking machines, worldwide and has expanded globally.
