Pitney Bowes traces its roots to 1902, when Arthur Pitney created his first postage stamping machine and, with Eugene A. Rummler, founded the Pitney Postal Machine Company. In 1908 Walter Bowes was offering stamp-cancelling machines. In 1920 Arthur Pitney and Walter Bowes merged to create the Pitney Bowes Postage Meter Company, combining Pitney’s postage stamping machine with Bowes’s stamp-cancelling machine.

Since then Pitney Bowes has become a global leader in franking machines and mailroom equipment. In the 1970s it expanded into other areas such as copying machines, and today it offers many mailroom products including folding and inserting machines, geolocation software and document composition.
