Buying a second-hand franking machine: what to check first

Be careful with used franking machines. A franking machine has to be registered and relicensed before it can be recredited and used, and that process often costs more than the machine itself. Many machines listed on eBay are leased or rented units that can’t legally be transferred or relicensed – so always verify the meter / serial number with the manufacturer before you buy.

Why used franking machines are different

Unlike ordinary office equipment, you can’t just plug in a franking machine and start posting. You need a Royal Mail licence to use it, and the machine must be registered to you to top up postage. The relicensing and reconnection process can be costly.

The eBay problem

Franking machines are a prohibited item to resell in many cases. Leased or rented machines that aren’t returned to the manufacturer are often logged as lost or stolen, which means they can’t be relicensed – leaving the buyer with a machine they can’t legally use.

What to check before buying second-hand

  • Ask for the meter / serial number (it starts with letters followed by digits) and verify it with the manufacturer.
  • Confirm the machine isn’t logged as lost, stolen or still on a lease.
  • Factor in the cost of relicensing and reconnection.

If in doubt, contact the machine’s manufacturer directly to confirm the serial number and whether the machine can be relicensed before you buy.
