Franking Machine Support · Data Upload
Why your franking machine needs a monthly data centre connection, and what to do when the prompt appears.
Why does my franking machine need to connect to the data centre?
Once a month, your franking machine (meter) must connect to the Pitney Bowes Data Centre. This connection serves two purposes:
- Data upload: Usage data recorded by your franking machine is sent to Royal Mail as required by UK postal regulations.
- Rate and software updates: Current postal rates and any pending software updates are downloaded to your meter.
When a connection is due, your machine will display the prompt: “Connection required — Connect (Yes/No)”. Press Enter/Yes to connect immediately.
How do I complete the monthly data centre connection?
- When the display shows “Connection required — Connect (Yes/No)”, press Enter/Yes.
- The machine connects to the Data Centre and uploads data and downloads any updates.
- Follow any on-screen prompts to confirm the connection is complete.
Note: At the beginning of each month, many franking machines connect simultaneously which can cause slight delays. If a connection takes more than 10 minutes, turn the meter off at the power lead, wait approximately 30 minutes, then reboot. The machine will restart and display the connection prompt again. Press Enter/Yes to reconnect.
What happens if I miss a monthly data centre connection?
UK postal regulations require franking machines to connect to the Data Centre at least every 90 days. If the machine goes longer than 90 days without a connection, it will lock and prevent you from printing postage until a successful connection is made. To avoid a lockout, respond to the monthly connection prompt as soon as it appears.
