How to replace the ink cartridge and fix printing problems on the FP Mailing PostBase series franking machine, including poor print, contact failure and calibration messages.

Note: These instructions apply to the following PostBase franking machines: PostBase Econ, Office, Enterprise, Enterprise Pro, Qi3, Qi4, Qi6, Qi9 and Ten.

How do I replace the ink cartridge on the PostBase?

To replace the ink cartridge on the PostBase, open Change Cartridges from the Print System menu, remove both cartridges and fit the new ones, then run a test print.

  1. Select Menu.
  2. Select Print System.
  3. Select Change Cartridges.
  4. The lid lifts automatically so you can see the ink cartridges.
  5. Press down and pull forward on both ink cartridges — they pop out of place.
  6. Remove both ink cartridges from the machine slowly and safely.
  7. Take your new ink cartridges and remove the protective layer from both.
  8. Place the new cartridges into the franking machine so each is seated nicely.
  9. Firmly press down on the ink cartridges until they both click into place.
  10. Close the lid.
  11. The franking machine performs maintenance and prompts you to run a test pattern.
  12. Place an envelope or label into the machine to print the test pattern.
  13. If you are happy with the test pattern, press the green tick button on the touch screen.

How do I solve print quality issues on the PostBase?

To solve print quality issues on the PostBase, remove the cartridges, clean the print heads with a damp tissue, then refit them and run a test print.

  1. Select Print System.
  2. Select Change Cartridges. The lid opens.
  3. Press down on the cartridges and remove them from the machine.
  4. With a damp tissue, wipe the print heads of the ink cartridges.
  5. Place tissue paper over the print heads so it covers them.
  6. Shake the ink cartridge and repeat for the other cartridge — there should now be two ink lines on the tissue paper.
  7. Insert both cartridges back into the machine, ensuring the print heads face down and away from you.
  8. Close the lid.
  9. The machine cleans the cartridges and prompts a test print. Process a label through the machine — the impression should be perfect.

How do I resolve a contact failure on the PostBase?

To resolve a contact failure on the PostBase, remove the cartridges, clean their contacts with a rubber, then refit them and run a test print.

  1. Select Continue.
  2. Select Change Cartridges. The lid opens.
  3. Press down on the cartridges and remove them from the machine.
  4. With a rubber, gently rub the contacts on both ink cartridges.
  5. Insert both cartridges back into the machine, ensuring the print heads face down and away from you.
  6. Close the lid.
  7. The machine cleans the cartridges and prompts a test print. Process a label through the machine — the impression should be perfect.

How do I deep-clean a PostBase ink cartridge to fix no, half or poor print?

To deep-clean a PostBase ink cartridge when it will not print despite having ink, flush the print head with hot water and a warm damp cloth until the ink flows freely.

What you will need

  • The faulty ink cartridge
  • A folded warm damp cloth
  • Folded tissue paper or kitchen roll
  • A mug of boiling hot water

Steps

  1. Remove the ink cartridge from the franking machine.
  2. Press the ink cartridge down onto folded tissue to see if the ink flows.
  3. Place the tip of the print head into boiling water and hold it there for around 30 seconds.
  4. Press the ink cartridge down onto a warm damp cloth for around 10 seconds.
  5. Press the ink cartridge onto the tissue again to check the ink flow.
  6. You are aiming for two parallel tram lines.
  7. Place the ink cartridge back in your machine and run a test print.

Note: If the problem persists, repeat the process.


How do I clear “Not Registering”, “Calibration Error”, “Temperature Calibration” or “Contact Failure” messages on the PostBase?

To clear these messages on the PostBase, clean the cartridge contacts carefully with a rubber or alcohol wipe, then refit the cartridge and test again.

  • The ink cartridge with dirty contacts
  • A rubber, or
  • An alcohol wipe

Steps

  1. Remove the ink cartridge from the franking machine.
  2. Clean the contacts on the ink cartridge very carefully using a rubber or the alcohol wipe provided.
  3. Dry off or wipe away any residue.
  4. Reinsert the ink cartridge into the franking machine and test again.
